SERBIA - National review, No 83
Prologue
It seems that this strange year is going to pass somehow after all. This vortex that has gripped and scattered us around, some forever. What has happened? Temptation, the fire testing what we are made of, a great warning? Have we learned to discern signs, read the game?
There is hope that the year ahead will be at least a little new. And that we will learn lessons from the old one well, because some study materials should not be studied again. The last issue of National Review in 2020, as the final stroke with a brush, brings before us another complete picture. You will see which one. The end is, always, also a beginning. <

A SMALL NOTEBOOK FROM JOURNEYS AROUND PEŠTER
On Serbian Tibet Again
Whenever we come here, everything is the same, as if time stands still. And everything is different, as if centuries have passed. Years and destinies line up like on that wolf-tooth necklace found by the archaeologists. These long-lived people will offer you cheese, smoked mutton, buckwheat pancakes, juniper brandy, pine needle juice, qurabiya or kalburabastı. And a story that smells and crackles like pine log in a shepherd’s fire, there, in the mountain katun. And you never get to wonder why you keep coming back

EČKA, IN BANAT, AND ITS TOWERS OVER THE PLAIN
Towers in Time
The Church of St. Nicholas has entered its fourth century and is the oldest wooden temple in Banat. In the 19th century, the Romanian Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit was also built here, as well as the water tower next to the famous Kaštel. (...) Even today, these towers are reflected as symbols in the waters and the heavens, in stories and chronicles. Occasionally, the music of nine-year-old Franz Liszt gets intertwined there, as well the legends about the treasure of Attila the Scourge of God

FAMOUS VICTORY NEAR VARVARIN 210 YEARS AGO
The Strength of Slavs is in Their Concord
There were nine thousand Serbs and three thousand Russians on one side and twice as many Turks on the other. Joseph Cornelius O’Rourke, of Irish ancestry, commanded the Serbo-Russian forces, and Hurshid Pasha commanded the Turks. Great and shiny was the Slavic victory. Besides Count O’Rourke, many other heroes, such as Jovan Kursula, Hayduk Veljko, knyaz of Temnić Jefta Brkić, described in epics and unforgettable, fought admirably

Holy Men
METROPOLITAN AMFILOHIJE (1938–2020), A SHEPHERD WHO LEFT A TRACE
The Bright Boy
God sent him to religiously desolate Montenegro after it became obvious that the atheist government, near the end of its reign, intended to complete the destruction. His resistance and religious service lasted thirty years. He raised churches and monastic communities, renewed the nation and faith, ascended asceticism and the highest role-models of our ancestors. He wrote, translated, published books. He embraced poets. He told stories, sermons, taught, recuperated and comforted, reached everywhere. He brought Montenegro from dark obedient burrows to Holy Processions. When he passed away, someone said: ”We lost a shepherd and theologian, but now we have a saint”

PAVLE VUISIĆ (1926–1988), UNFORGETTABLE SERBIAN ACTOR AND LEGEND OF BELGRADE
Great Gift of the Gentle Grump
He never succeeded in enrolling in the Academy, but everyone considered him ”academician of acting”. He never graduated from law school, but righteousness was an important feature of his character. He was reporter in Radio Belgrade, actor in the Pančevo Theater. He acted in famous movies with great directors: Voja Nanović, Vladimir Pogačić, Žika Pavlović, Branko Bauer, Aleksandar Petrović, Slobodan Šijan, Goran Paskaljević, Emir Kusturica… He used to say that he was not acting, just behaving. He loved Ada and Belgrade rivers, made ships, but sailed only his own inner seas

DUŠKO BABIĆ, PHD, WRITER, AUTHOR OF STUDY ”NJEGOŠ’S NATIONALISM”
Wonderful Name and Holy Freedom
For Njegoš, belonging to a nation is a metaphysical and religious category, not sociological and historical. Patriotism is a path to immortality of mortal beings, ”electrism of the soul”. The ”Kosovo Notion”, spiritually prepared by St. Sava, was legalized by Njegoš with his poetic-prophetic proclamations. Poetry is a defense against anxiety, turmoil and shallowness, man’s response to God, a road to understanding hidden truths of the world. If it gives up on high standards of book and culture, the Serbian Literary Cooperative will lose both the reason and meaning of its existence

VUKICA MIKAČA LOVREN, ART PHOTOGRAPHER, MASTER
Talking Pictures
Her photos are included in permanent exhibitions of the Museum of Applied Arts and Museum of Theatrical Arts, exhibitions around the world, as well as the ”Atelje 212” buffet. She says she needed a decade to pass the difficult road from reporter to photographer. The first rushes with his equipment to reach and eternalize a moment, while the latter has to depict the character of the hero of the story, the time, the place, the occasion. However, she hasn’t been running for work for a long time, on the contrary. Some writers and film directors boast that she translated them into the language of photography

WITH DRAGIĆ BUGARIN, GUSLE PLAYER AND MASTER MAKER OF THIS INSTRUMENT
My Gusle, the Soul of Maple
Serbs carry this instrument from ancient times and ancient forms, from known and unknown homelands. They make them with one or two strings. From ash tree, wild cherry, wild pear... The best are made of maple. ”I give my best for the warmth of the gusle”, says Dragić. Gusle is our epic and our monument, our ethics and sensitivity, what we have been based on for millennia. The most important thing is for us to be there and to have someone to hand over that heritage to

DEJAN MILOJEVIĆ, IMPORTANT NAME OF SERBIAN BASKETBALL
Waiting for New Challenges
Both as player and coach, he is the silent, unmovable rock which everything rests upon. Which he holds on to in the most difficult and most dangerous times. He won many national and international trophies, as member of a club and the national team. For eight years, he has been creating the wonder called ”Mega”, which gave birth to a multitude of extraordinary players, such as Jokić, Micić, Dangubić. He believes that basketball in the Southern-Slavic area still doesn’t have anything better than the regional league. He believes that a future in NBA is opening before him. The situation in Serbian basketball is not impeccable, but there are people who will preserve its high ranking

RUMA DEVELOPMENT TREND CONTINUES IN 2020, IN SPITE OF EVERYTHING
Solutions, not Excuses
The epidemic has imposed some different priorities and slowed down development processes, but did not stop them. In the Ruman industrial zones, the existing plants are being expanded and new ones are being opened, as well as new jobs. VThere is great concern for people’s health, population policy, children, and a better quality of life for everyone
Health
SPECIAL HOSPITAL ”MERKUR” IN COVID MODE
Fighting for Human Lives
”Merkur” was in the Covid system last spring as well. That experience will be used in this stage of operation, as well as what was conveyed by the anti-epidemic teams of Russia and China. Such deployment in the service of the health system of Serbia is a kind of defense of the homeland. It is not a convenient pathos, but a harsh reality
